A mystery basket turns ordinary cooking into a game. The random ingredient generator picks a handful of ingredients you didn’t plan for, and your job is to turn them into something good. TV cooking competitions such as Chopped made this format famous, and this ingredient randomizer lets you play a Chopped-style round at home. It’s an independent tool with no connection to any show.

How to use the random ingredient generator

  1. Set the rules. Choose How many (3, 4 or 5) and a Diet (Anything, Vegetarian, Vegan or Pescatarian). Tick Always include a protein for a basket that can anchor a main dish, and Add a wildcard for one surprise, such as a fruit, a sweet or an unusual pantry item.
  2. Generate your basket. Press Generate ingredients. Each ingredient appears as a chip with an emoji and its category. Don’t have one of them? Tap that chip to swap just that ingredient and keep the rest.
  3. Start cooking. Press Start 30-min timer to begin the countdown. Find recipes with these runs a web search for dishes that use your basket, and Copy list saves the ingredients for your shopping list or group chat.

Random ingredient challenge rules

Set the rules before anyone touches a knife. Most groups allow basic pantry staples, such as oil, butter, salt, pepper, flour, garlic and common spices, and require every basket ingredient to show up in the final dish.

  • Solo. Four ingredients, 30 minutes, one plate. Repeat it weekly and see how your improvising improves.
  • Couples. Generate one basket and cook separately in the same kitchen, or take turns as head chef and assistant. Swap plates and taste without saying who made what.
  • Kids. Use 3 ingredients, Vegetarian, and no wildcard. Pick no-cook or low-heat formats like wraps, salads or yogurt bowls, and have an adult handle knives and the stove.
  • Party. Split into teams and give everyone the same basket so the results are easy to compare. Turn on the wildcard for extra chaos.

Scoring. Judges rate each dish from 1 to 5 in four areas: taste, creativity, use of the basket and presentation. The top score out of 20 wins, and the losing team does the dishes.

How to turn random ingredients into a dish

When a basket looks impossible, give every ingredient a job. Most satisfying meals have four parts:

  • Protein: meat, fish, eggs, beans, tofu or cheese.
  • Starch: rice, pasta, bread, potatoes or tortillas.
  • Vegetable: anything fresh, frozen or canned.
  • Sauce or flavor: an acid, a fat, heat, herbs or something sweet.

Put each basket item in a slot, then fill the empty slots from your pantry. Next, choose a format that can absorb almost anything: a stir-fry, tacos, a grain bowl, pasta, a frittata, soup or fried rice. A sweet wildcard can go into a glaze, a salad dressing or a quick dessert on the side. Taste as you go and adjust with salt and acid before plating, and make sure any meat, fish or eggs are cooked through.

Use it to cook with what you have

The generator also works without a challenge. Generate a basket, then tap any chip you don’t have until the list matches what’s actually in your kitchen, and let the four-part framework above do the rest. Our guide on what to eat when you have nothing at home has more pantry ideas. Frequently asked questions

What is a random ingredient challenge?

It's a cooking game where you don't choose your ingredients. The random ingredient generator hands you a small basket of 3 to 5 items, and you have to create one dish that uses all of them, usually against a timer. Basic pantry staples like oil, salt, pepper and water are normally free to use. It's a fun way to practice improvising in the kitchen.

How do I run a Chopped-style challenge at home?

Generate 4 ingredients with Add a wildcard ticked, so the basket includes one surprise. Agree on which pantry staples are allowed, press Start 30-min timer and cook. When time is up, plate the dish and have the judges score taste, creativity, use of the basket and presentation. Like the TV format, the fun is in making odd combinations work.

Can I use the ingredient generator for vegetarian or vegan cooking?

Yes. Set Diet to Vegetarian, Vegan or Pescatarian before you press Generate ingredients, and every ingredient will match. If you keep Always include a protein ticked, a vegan basket will draw a plant-based protein. Check every label for allergens, especially with packaged items, and swap out anything that doesn't work for your group by tapping its chip.

What if my random ingredients don't go together?

That's part of the challenge, but you have options. Tap any chip to swap just that ingredient for a new one. Or give each item a role, such as protein, starch, vegetable or flavor, and build a forgiving format like a stir-fry, wrap or grain bowl around them. Odd extras like fruit or chocolate often work best in a sauce, glaze or quick dessert.
