The story behind the Random Food Generator

We know the feeling well. You open the fridge, stare for a few minutes, close it, open it again — and nothing changes. You scroll delivery apps for twenty minutes and order the same thing you had last Tuesday. That daily “what should I eat?” struggle is exactly why we built the Random Food Generator.

We are a small team of food lovers and web developers who got tired of the endless back-and-forth that comes with meal decisions — the group-chat “you pick!” “no, you pick!” loop, and the solo overthinking spiral that ends with skipping the meal altogether.

Why we built it

The idea is simple: take the mental load out of food decisions and make the moment a little fun. Instead of browsing endless options, you set the limits that matter — meal, cuisine, diet, time — and let chance pick one dish. If you are still torn, the built-infood wheel settles it.

How we build and check the food list

The generator currently draws from 484 dishes across 21 cuisines. We only include real, recognizable dishes — the kind you can find a recipe for or order at a restaurant — rather than single ingredients or invented names. Each dish is tagged with:

  • the meals it is realistically eaten for (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, dessert);
  • its diet, based on the most common way it is made (vegan, vegetarian, pescatarian or contains meat);
  • whether the standard version is naturally gluten-free;
  • a typical home cooking time and a spice level;
  • a short, factual description of what it is.

Tags describe the typical version of a dish. Recipes vary between cooks, restaurants and regions, so please always check ingredients if you have an allergy, intolerance or strict dietary rules.

Built for everyone

Food is personal — shaped by culture, health, ethics and taste. That is why the generator works across vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian and meat-eating diets, offers a gluten-free filter, and covers cuisines from India andJapan to Mexico, the Caribbean, Africa and the Middle East. We keep adding dishes and cuisines.

Our principles

  • Free, no sign-up. The tool works the moment the page loads.
  • Fast on any phone. Pages are lightweight static HTML, and the tool needs no app.
  • Honest randomness. Picks use your browser’s cryptographic random generator, so every matching dish has an equal chance.
  • Privacy first. Your filters and picks stay in your browser. See our privacy policy.
