Dessert decisions are usually less about hunger and more about logistics: is the oven free, and do you have twenty minutes or two hours? The dessert generator picks a real dessert and shows its total time, so you can tell right away whether it’s a tonight idea or a make-ahead project. It runs on the same engine as our random food generator, with Dessert already selected, so every result is a proper sweet, whether that’s a French tart or a Pakistani carrot pudding.

How to use the dessert generator

    1. Set your filters. Ready in includes baking, chilling and setting time, so choose 20 min or less for instant gratification or Any time if you can plan ahead. Pick a Cuisine for a themed dinner or a Diet such as Vegan, and open More filters for Gluten-free only, How many and No repeats.
    2. Press Pick a dessert. Hit the Space key to see another.
    3. Bake, buy or share. Tap Recipe for instructions, Find near me to see which bakeries or restaurants make it, or Share to send the idea to whoever’s bringing dessert.

    No-bake vs baked desserts

For many people the first question isn’t flavor, it’s the oven.

No-bake desserts skip the oven, though many still need fridge time:

    • Affogato: a scoop of gelato drowned in hot espresso. Five minutes, start to finish.
    • Eton Mess: broken meringue, strawberries and whipped cream folded together.
    • Tiramisu: coffee-dipped ladyfingers layered with mascarpone cream, then chilled for hours.
    • Mango Pomelo Sago: a Hong Kong dessert of mango, pomelo and sago pearls, served cold.

Baked desserts take more precision but reward you with warm results:

    • Sticky Toffee Pudding: a soft date sponge drenched in toffee sauce.
    • Tarte Tatin: apples caramelized in butter and sugar, baked under pastry, then flipped.
    • Brownies: about 45 minutes from bowl to plate and easy to cut for a crowd.

Cakes, pastries and other sweet food

As a random sweet food generator, it covers far more than cake. You might land on Turkish Baklava, Indian Gulab Jamun (fried milk dumplings in syrup), Chinese Tangyuan (glutinous rice balls in sweet soup) or Brazilian Brigadeiros, the chocolate truffles that are a fun alternative to cookies at kids’ parties.

If you’re in a cake mood, the classics in the list include Tres Leches Cake, a sponge soaked in three kinds of milk; Tarta de Santiago, a Galician almond cake that’s traditionally gluten-free; and New York Cheesecake, which is best made the day before so it can set. To explore one country’s sweets, set the Cuisine filter and press the button a few times. Our guide to discovering new cuisines without traveling has more ways to keep exploring.

Spin the random dessert generator wheel

Torn between a few? Set How many to 3 or 5, then tap Spin my picks on the wheel to send your shortlist to the wheel tab. You can also press Fill with random dishes for eight desserts that follow your filters, or type your own list, such as the treats at your local bakery. Press SPIN for a fair, no-arguments pick. Save wheel keeps the list in this browser, and Copy wheel link shares it with whoever’s coming over. For a wheel of whole meals, use the food wheel.

    Tips for hosting and planning

When you’re feeding a group, generate 5 desserts and favor ones you can finish before guests arrive; Tres Leches Cake and Tiramisu both improve after a night in the fridge. Serving brunch instead? Pair a sweet idea with a savory one from the random breakfast generator. Desserts are also where allergens hide: nuts, eggs, dairy and gluten show up in many classics, and the labels here describe traditional recipes only.

    Frequently asked questions

What dessert should I make tonight?

If dessert needs to happen tonight, set Ready in to 20 min or less and choose from fast options like Affogato, Eton Mess or Pain Perdu. With an hour, a Sticky Toffee Pudding or a Pouding Chômeur comes out of the oven warm. Anything listed at several hours, like Tiramisu or Creme Brulee, is better made today and served tomorrow.

    What are easy no-bake desserts?

Easy no-bake desserts in the generator include Eton Mess (meringue, strawberries and whipped cream), Affogato, Mango Pomelo Sago and Tiramisu. Nanaimo Bars from Canada are a no-bake classic too. Many no-bake desserts still need fridge or freezer time to set, so check the time on the result card before you start.

Can the dessert randomizer show vegan or gluten-free desserts?

Yes. Choose Vegan in the Diet menu for desserts like Mango Sticky Rice, Daifuku Mochi or fruit Paletas, the Mexican ice pops. Tick Gluten-free only under More filters for options like Tarta de Santiago, Macarons or Creme Brulee. Labels reflect traditional recipes, so check the specific recipe or ask the bakery, especially for celiac disease or nut allergies.

Can I use it as a random cake generator?

Partly. There's no cake-only filter, but cakes come up often: Tres Leches Cake, Victoria Sponge, New York Cheesecake, Caribbean Rum Cake and Tarta de Santiago among them. To pick only between cakes, type your shortlist into the wheel tab, one per line, and press SPIN. Save wheel keeps that cake list for next time.
