Itโ€™s 6 p.m., the fridge is open, and nobody wants to decide. The random dinner generator answers โ€œwhat should I have for dinner tonight?โ€ with a real dish that fits your evening, then tells you how to get it on the table. Think of it as a dinner decider that never says โ€œI donโ€™t mind.โ€ For any meal of the day, our random food generator works the same way.

How to use the random dinner generator

    1. Set your limits. Dinner is already selected. Choose Ready in (20, 45 or 90 min or less, or Any time), then a Cuisine and Diet if you need them. More filters adds Spice, How many (1, 3 or 5), Gluten-free only and No repeats.
    2. Press Pick my dinner. Press the Space key to pick again as often as you like.
    3. Choose how to eat it. The result card shows the dish, cuisine, time, diet and spice level. Tap Cook at home or Order in, or Share to send tonightโ€™s dinner to your household.

Cook at home or order in?

Every dinner card ends with two buttons, so this dinner picker settles both questions at once:

    • ๐Ÿณ Cook at home searches the web for recipes for that dish, so you can check ingredients and steps before you commit.
    • ๐Ÿ›ต Order in opens a map search for that dish near you, showing nearby places that may serve it for delivery or pickup.

A simple rule: if the time on the card is longer than the time you have, tap Order in. If you just want a quick chain meal, the fast food wheel picks a chain and an item to try. If youโ€™d rather choose between your usual spots, put them on the random restaurant picker.

Pick dinner by the time you have

When youโ€™re really asking what to make for dinner tonight, time matters more than cravings. The same dinner randomizer gives very different results depending on the clock:

Time you have Ready in setting Dinners you might get
Barely any 20 min or less Chinese Egg Fried Rice, Tomato and Egg Stir-Fry, Cacio e Pepe
A normal weeknight 45 min or less Spaghetti Carbonara, Lomo Saltado, Moules Marinieres
A relaxed evening 90 min or less Butter Chicken, Jambalaya, Chicken Cacciatore
A slow Sunday Any time Boeuf Bourguignon, Osso Buco, Mole Poblano

Times on each card are rough totals including prep, and a first attempt at a new dish usually takes longer.

    Spin the dinner wheel

Prefer a wheel of dinner ideas to a single pick? The Dinner Wheel tab turns your options into dinner roulette where every slice has the same odds. Type your own dinners, one per line, or press Fill with random dishes for eight that follow your filters. Generated a few you like? Spin my picks on the wheel moves them over. Press SPIN and the winner gets the same Cook at home and Order in buttons when it matches a dish in our library.

Got a regular rotation? Press Save wheel to keep it in this browser, or Copy wheel link so a partner or roommate can spin the same dinner spinner on their phone.

    Pick dinner by mood

Sometimes the feeling comes before the food:

    • Comfort: look for Mac and Cheese, Shepherdโ€™s Pie or Lasagna.
    • Light and fresh: try Moules Marinieres or Ratatouille.
    • Craving heat: set the Cuisine to Indian or Thai for dishes like Laal Maas or Pad Kra Pao.
    • Meat-free night: set Diet to Vegetarian or Vegan before you pick.

For more ways to break the nightly stalemate, read our guide on what to eat for dinner tonight. Diet, spice and gluten-free labels describe traditional recipes, so check ingredients if anyone at the table has an allergy.

    Frequently asked questions

What should I have for dinner tonight?

Start with how much time you have, not what you feel like. With 20 minutes, Chinese Egg Fried Rice or Cacio e Pepe works. With 45 minutes, try Lomo Saltado or Moules Marinieres. With a free evening, go for a braise like Coq au Vin. Still stuck? Set Ready in above and press Pick my dinner for an instant answer.

What's the difference between Cook at home and Order in?

Cook at home opens a web search for recipes of the dish on your card, so you can check ingredients and steps. Order in opens a Google Maps search for that dish near you, showing local places that may serve it for delivery or pickup. Neither button needs an account, and the generator never asks for your location.

How does the dinner wheel work?

Open the Dinner Wheel tab and type up to 24 dinners, one per line, or press Fill with random dishes for eight dinners that follow your filters. Press SPIN and every slice has the same chance. Save wheel keeps your list in this browser, and Copy wheel link lets everyone at home spin the same wheel.

How can we choose dinner without arguing?

Try the one-filter-each rule: one person picks the cuisine and the other picks the diet or time limit. Set How many to 3, give each person a single veto, and cook whatever survives. If two options remain, tap Spin my picks on the wheel and let the dinner roulette break the tie. Nobody can blame the wheel.
